Well, it's my interpretation that because the new technique was introduced in Mac OS 10.4 and later, the older technique has become obsolete. Not deprecated or invalid though.
Here's the original quote: "In Mac OS X v10.4 and later, it is possible to create a bitmap image representation object and draw to it directly. This technique is simple and does not require the creation of any extraneous objects, such as an image or window. If your code needs to run in earlier versions of Mac OS X, however, you cannot use this technique."
