So, the second will only be evaluated if the first returns NO when

BOOL someValue = [object returnsBool] || [anotherObject alsoReturnsBool];

whereas what you have is

BOOL someValue = [object returnsBool] | [anotherObject alsoReturnsBool];

which is a bitwise OR of two YESes, essentially.
