Since a property of an image view is its image, it's natural to have setters and getters for that property. What a client code might use them for is none of its business.

It's very common to change the image in an image view, for example a UI might show an icon or preview of some object that is selected and the selection can change... So everything you've written after "assuming the..." is just reflecting your personal limited use of NSImageView that has no real bearing on the design of the object.
