OK, looks like my Airport hardware is up the swanee. Cut a long story short - none of the suggested diagnostics turned up anything unusual, so I reinstalled the OS on a totally wiped disk. Still no joy over AirPort, but now wired ethernet is OK. It's a new machine so it's going back to the store this afternoon.
