I never had any problem including UTF8 chars in NSStrings, like arrows, math symbols or other weird glyphs. My guess is either a glitch in Terminal or the shell you use (stty pass8, etc.). Does it happen with NSLog? In general, I think it is much better to use NSLog rather than fprintf (stderr, …).
