You can't make calls on > them.
The in call status bar is also used when another device is connected to your iPhone's “Personal Hotspot.” Perhaps the LTE versions of iPads support this feature. On the other hand, I would suspect navigation routing… but my quick iPad test didn’t show an updated status bar.
