That’s done because the Open panel itself can’t be bound by the limitations of 
a sandboxed process. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the NSOpenPanel code in 
your process is thread-safe, though, so unless you’re told that it can be used 
on a background thread I wouldn’t do it. Even if it works today, you might find 
it crashes in two weeks when you try it on the (hypothetical) beta of 10.10.
