Then is there any downside to letting it appear beside the final location? Where does an app like Pages create its autosaves? (AFAIK, autosave uses this same API for its temp folder.) IIRC, in iOS the recommendation is to put documents inside a “Documents” subfolder of your application sandbox folder, leaving you free to put other folders at the “top” sandbox level.
