thanks for pointing me to the FAQ. I missed that one. Commenting out the removeAttributes() call fixed it (for now).
As I've stated, I already tried to upgrade to Xerces 2.1.0, but that didn't solve it for me. Do I have to do anything else besides placing xercesImpl.jar and xmlParserAPIs.jar in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/endorsed and $COCOON_HOME/WEB-INF/lib ?
