The Open Source Project castor is a very helpfull Tool for mapping data from a database into Java-Objects. Overwrite the getFormModel() Method in your Action to get a Bean from the Database and commit it somewhere in perform().
I use a special Bean which holds the Business-Model in a java.lang.Object attribute and HashMap. The hashmap can also manipulated with JXPath and XPath statements and can hold very helpfull navigation and non-business-model information.
