I don't know about your particular problem, but have you tried to use the cocoon logs to analyze what's happening?
The logs usually help a lot if you take some time to learn to interpret them.
The best way is to use LogFactor5 to watch the logs in real time, see http://wiki.cocoondev.org/Wiki.jsp?page=LogFactorFiveHowto
