Someone reported that the StarOffice problems he saw were fixed after
uncommenting the following lines in the soffice startup script.
STAR_PROFILE_LOCKING_DISABLED=1
export STAR_PROFILE_LOCKING_DISABLED
I'm not sure if this fixes the problem you described.
