Position Summary:

Contribute to a growing team of partners including faculty, librarians, and 
educational technologists focused on building capacity in spatial analysis and 
spatial data visualization within the library and across campus.   Advance 
knowledge and skills in spatial science within the Library’s Teaching, 
Learning, and Research (TLR) team to support spatial thinking and spatial 
literacy across campus.  Play a central role in developing and providing 
services to support the identification, creation, curation, visualization, 
analysis, and dissemination of spatial data used and generated by the Smith 
College community. Develop curricular materials and tools for classes using 
spatial data technologies. Work with faculty and students to promote the use of 
spatial research methods in a wide range of knowledge domains, including 
developing innovative Digital Humanities projects. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Technology   Apply current and emerging learning frameworks and 
knowledge of spatial technologies and methods to design and support the 
creation of instructional materials, and online/blended learning objects for a 
diverse set of classes in the Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences. 
Collaborate closely with departments and programs that are major users of GIS 
technology and advise curricular development that reflects current and 
developing research needs. Provide in-person technical support to students and 
faculty working on independent research using spatial technologies. Identify 
needs and opportunities for workshop development; design engaging instructional 
materials and teach workshops on a regular schedule. Instruct non-credit 
one-week interterm GIS class and other related (possibly credit bearing) 
classes depending on need.

 

Application and Map Development  Develop map-centric applications enabling new 
research and teaching methods utilizing digitized collections.  Assist in the 
conception and implementation of an evolving strategy designed to expand the 
Library’s spatial data presence and to make extraordinary collections 
available/visible in digital form. Coordinate and participate in initiatives 
and activities to build digital applications that facilitate discovery and 
access to the library’s spatial data holdings.    

 

Data Management, Equipment Maintenance, and System Administration Provide 
administrative and program support in maintaining the Library’s spatial data 
collection, and acquire or generate new digital materials to support classroom 
and research activities. Generate metadata as required to meet internal and 
external standards and requirements. Develop and administer enterprise / 
organizational maps services both hosted and cloud based systems.  Configure 
and maintain field data collection equipment.

 

Administration and outreach  Identify opportunities to apply spatial tools and 
methods to internal and external funding possibilities that advance spatial 
literacy at the college. Assist in proposal writing, budget development, and 
administration of grant awards. Participate in grant-funded research and 
collaborate on digital scholarship projects with the Teaching, Learning, & 
Research group and faculty. Assist in all forms of outreach, drawing upon the 
full range of library services, including blog posts, social media and 
conference presentations. Conduct targeted outreach to nontraditional GIS users 
and student organizations.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:  Advanced degree in discipline such as Geography, 
Geoscience, Environmental Science with emphasis in quantitative spatial data 
analysis plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience with research or direct project 
experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a higher education 
setting, or an equivalent combination of education/experience.  Teaching 
experience, especially at the undergraduate level.  Experience supervising 
students in a work-study environment

Skills: Knowledge of current issues and trends in pedagogy; understanding of 
current data analysis and data visualization methods.  Excellent critical 
thinking, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). Ability 
to communicate well with faculty, staff and users at all levels and from 
diverse backgrounds. Proficient with GIS software with a focus on ESRI ArcGIS 
and skills in interacting with GIS software programmatically.  Fluent in ArcGIS 
API for Javascript and ArcPy.  Fluent in open-source and web-based GIS and data 
analysis tools such as Leaflet, jQuery, OpenStreetMap, QGIS, 
PostGreSQL/PostGIS, SQL, and GeoServer.  Demonstrated experience working with 
data management and visualization tools such as D3.js, R, Javascript, and 
Python.  Knowledge of data management and curation.  Demonstrated ability to 
initiate and manage collaborative projects.
