The University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) seek a dynamic and empathetic leader as Head of the Technology Strategy and Services (TeSS) department which is the department responsible for the assessment, procurement, development, and deployment of IT tools and strategies within the Libraries. In collaboration with library leadership, the TeSS Department Head sets the technology strategies and directions for UAL. This is an exciting opportunity to work across a broad array of problem domains and stakeholder groups and to set future directions for technology in the UA Libraries. The successful candidate will understand the evolving technology needs in higher education and in libraries, be user focused, and have excellent management experience and skills. The Department Head for TeSS plays a critical role in defining and leading the Libraries’ technology vision and strategy both in the short and long term. We are looking for someone with strong management and mentoring experience and with a demonstrated capacity for moving organizations in strategic directions. We have a collaborative culture, and TeSS, in particular, works closely across all Libraries’ departments and other partners on campus and beyond. The TeSS Department Head will serve on Cabinet, the senior management team for the Libraries and engage with key campus leaders in units such as University Information Technology Services (UITS), on issues of strategic importance. Strong communication, advocacy skills, the ability to work with multiple stakeholders are critical for success. This is a unique opportunity to lead a group of approximately 18 FTE of staff who provide the backbone of technology support to the Libraries. The Head has four direct reports (3 unit leads and 1 project manager/service lead); this group is the leadership team (“TeSS Leads”) for the Head. The Head reports to the Vice Dean of the Libraries. TeSS creates, manages, and maintains technology services through three groups: Library Operations supports the library help desk, endpoint management, digital signage, A/V and events; Software Development builds and maintains web applications and automation tools; and Platform Engineering administers and maintains server infrastructure (on-premise and cloud) used for application hosting and data storage.
