I'll mention Glimpse Image Editor (https://glimpse-editor.org/) as a tool. It's 
a fork of GNU Image Manipulation Program with a less problematic name.

Hi Charles,
Can you use Gimp? It is like a 'poor human's PhotoShop"? Try plcaing the jpg on 
another background to see if the check background indicates transparency.
