Summary:

Temple University Libraries seeks an enthusiastic, patron-focused individual to 
be our new Science & Engineering Librarian. The position is based at our 
award-winning, state-of-the-art Charles Library, and will support programs in 
Temple University’s Colleges of Engineering and Science and Technology. You 
will be a member of our innovative and collaborative Science, Technology, 
Engineering and Biomedical Unit. We welcome applicants with a range of 
experiences, including those new to the profession. Temple University Libraries 
serves the Temple community and beyond, including close to 40,000 students; 
over 2,000 full-time faculty; and researchers and visitors on Main, Center 
City, and Health Sciences Center campuses in Philadelphia and on our Ambler and 
Harrisburg campuses. We are committed to providing research and learning 
services, offering open access to our facilities and information resources, and 
fostering innovation and experimentation. Our collections total more than four 
million physical and digital titles, over 275,000 print and electronic journal 
subscriptions, and more than 700 research databases. We also collect, preserve, 
and provide access to a broad universe of special collections, including rare 
books, manuscripts, archives, photographs, and more. As part of our library

advance learning and scholarship.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Biomedicine 
Unit, the Science & Engineering Librarian provides reference, specialized 
research support and instructional programming for students, faculty and staff 
in engineering, biology, chemistry, computer & information science, earth 
& environmental science, the mathematical sciences, and physics. Serves as 
library liaison for five or more science and engineering departments. The 
Science & Engineering Librarian conducts outreach to specialized labs and 
research centers in the College of Science & Technology and the College of 
Engineering. The librarian develops instructional materials and provides 
library instruction to students in the assigned subject areas as well as 
undergraduates in the general education curriculum. Participates in general 
reference and research consultations for students, staff, and faculty in person 
and virtually, by appointment and upon request. Engages faculty through 
outreach and promotional activities, including committee participation and 
attendance at collegial meetings and events and assists researchers and 
students with navigating the research and scholarly publication process. 
Contributes to the development and delivery of specialized services for 
research support and data management and select materials for library 
collections in all formats in support of the school’s academic programs. 
Maintains awareness of current trends in librarianship, sciences and 
engineering, higher education, and related academic fields. Performs other 
duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

ALA accredited MLIS/MLS. Experience designing and delivering learning content 
and applying information literacy concepts, such as developing learning 
outcomes and employing assessment techniques, to practice. Substantial 
coursework, library experience or practical lab experience in engineering or 
science fields, such as biology, physics, chemistry, geology, etc. An 
equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

*Experience in a science or engineering academic setting providing reference, 
consultation, or liaison services.

*Experience with evidence synthesis in engineering and sciences as a research 
method.

*Knowledge of or experience with STEM data analysis tools such as MatLab, 
Python, or R

*Knowledge of or experience with tools for collaborative research such as 
GitHub, electronic lab notebooks, data repositories, data sharing tools and 
repositories

*Facility with instruction and information technologies and creative use of 
technology to enhance learning.

*Experience developing and managing science or engineering-related collections 
in all formats.

*Knowledge of the information needs of relevant disciplines and an 
understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing.

*Educational background in a STEM discipline
