AVPreserve has published a new white paper, "What's the Real Impact of SHA-256? A Comparison of Checksum Algorithms", available for free download at http://www.avpreserve.com/avpsresources/papers-and-presentations/
Though SHA-256 is considered a stronger algorithm, MD5 is often more frequently adopted because of its faster processing times. We ran tests comparing actual processing speeds of the two algorithms, with some interesting results suggesting that in some situations the difference may be negligible, and that there are other issues which more significantly impact computing resources needed for generating and verifying checksums.
