"VM without a dedicated guest operating system" is a good way of putting it.

Docker is a flavor of "zone" or "container" or "jail" or "chroot" to use terminology from various operating system environments. Essentially you're running on the same underlying operating system, but your memory and process spaces are isolated from those of other containers.

The key difference between containers and true virtualization is that you don't have your own copy of an operating system - which means that you're limited to the underlying one - in the case of Docker, that's Linux. ("Zones" are a solaris term. "Jail" is a BSD term.)

Hello,

Docker is awesome. But an operating system is more about the packaged software,
look, and feel right? Docket is like a VM without a dedicated guest operating
system? It's like a guest application?

Honestly, your Host distro doesn't much matter, everything will be in Docker

Hello,

I believe librarians are special people. It would be nice if there were an
operating system created by us. Haven't come across one though.

Hello,

Every now and then I consider switching my main operating system. I've been
using Ubuntu for years. Does anyone know of any Linux distros made by
librarians or One that's most used by librarians?

Thanks,
