Indeed it does. In my non IRC work, I am a sysadmin for an electrical engineering department at a University, so I've had to play with Matlab a LOT.. getting it to recognise those letters is certainly not very difficult with some of it's toolboxes.. blur + contrast + sharpen + compared against known character shapes.. and hey presto. But any input from your PhD friend would certainly be appreciated, I'm sure.. maybe something like those colour blind tests ;)

Overall, I think this is a great concept for stopping mass registrations, however there is another issue.. as I'm sure some of you know, an almost identical process is used by Yahoo! in their user account creation form. I've had a look thru the USPTO.gov website, and they _don't seem_ to have a patent on it, but it's something to keep in mind.
