Hello peeps and ports! I have a minor frustration with trying to get my laptop

I have tried fiddling with ALSA in various ways, installed the complete
UBUNTU_STUDIO package, and messed around for a week or so, and even resorted to
trying to mount the device directly (after trying to record from device to
file....) all with no luck.
I hope this is not an innnnnnapppppropriaate call for help, but after a week of
fiddling I'm running out of options. Granted you'd have to dig to find my IQ,
but I wanted to DIM if you know what I mean (DIY in a self-referenceing attempt)
My Rhythm Synthesizer is a KORG ELECTRIBE ER-1, close to 10 years old, and
secondhand.
My USB to MIDI device is only labelled "Well Connected" on the box with an ID
of BC-08C.
I have 3 ports on the ER-1 (MIDI) in, out, through)
unfortunately, the windows based advice did not appear to help direct my
efforts (http://forums.techarena.in/hardware-peripherals/1113221.htm)
I will try and bring in my laptop, synth and cable to this month's SLUG and
hopefully someone can help me get it talking to my laptop during one of the BOF
sessions...
Thanks ,
bRO
