Subject: Introducing the new Microsoft Update: One-stop updating for any Microsoft product

In just a few short weeks we will be announcing the official release of a new service called Microsoft Update that will not only patch Windows components, but selected Microsoft Products beginning with Office 2003 and Office XP, with additional Microsoft technologies to follow. Microsoft Update is built on the same core technology as Windows Update, and is an enhancement of Windows Update that today services nearly 200M PCs world wide. Yes, that is right, one stop auto-updating for not only Windows, but Office, SQL, Exchange... No more having to go to Windows Update, followed by Office Update followed by multiple downloads off our download center... It will all just magically flow to your desktop when critical updates are available and you can now just visit one site to look for optional updates.

We are close enough to release, MU has been in beta long enough, it's time to go broad in the company and give all of you a chance to test it before we deliver the final service.

This is how you can help:
* Please go to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate, follow the prompts to access Microsoft Update, scan your machine for missing updates and install any available updates. * Turn Automatic Updates ON (from Start->My Computer-><right click>Properties->Automatic Updates tab - choose to download and install automatically at 3am

Also - the above link works from your home machines also - please try Microsoft Update and turn on Automatic Updates on your home machines, and as you get an opportunity, get your friends and family to also use Microsoft Update.

Thanks,

Brian

PS: This email is coming to you from my Longhorn dogfood machine, which by the way I use as my primary machine, so stay tuned for more email from me in the near future telling you how you to can get on the beta of the next great operating system release. It is going to rock!

===================

Details:

Customers will get updates from the Microsoft Update service, for all Microsoft products, in the future. It will not replace Windows Update, but instead is a separate service for which customers will sign up. On the first visit you will be prompted to complete the Microsoft Update Opt-in Wizard. If you are using Windows XP SP2 or Server 2003 SP1 you will need to click on the gold bar along the top of the browser window to view the ActiveX control installation prompt for this Opt-in Wizard.

After you have signed up for Microsoft Update, a new shortcut to the service will be placed on the Start menu, and the Windows Update icon will also redirect to Microsoft Update. The Automatic Updates client will also use the new service and will detect, download and install updates for all Microsoft products for you.

I urge you to try Microsoft Update, and strongly recommend that you turn on Automatic Updates. Many millions of customers have now enabled Automatic Updates and their machines check for updates once a day in the background. Even if you only visit Microsoft Update occasionally, please enable Automatic Updates so that we can get essential coverage on this core customer scenario.

Q&A:

Q: What operating systems are supported?
A: Windows 2000 SP3 and above; Windows XP; Windows Server 2003

Q: Can I use Microsoft Update if I am running Longhorn?
A: Not at this time. Longhorn support for Windows Update / Microsoft Update will be available in the future.

Q: Will I need to do anything extra when Microsoft Update is released to public? A: Nothing additional will be needed, as you will be automatically upgraded from the Release Candidate site to the RTM site.
