LA UNIVERSIDAD DE USC CONMEMORA LA CARRERA ARTISTICA DE
JORGE ESQUIVEL: EL GRAN BAILARIN DE BALLET CUBANO
QUIEN RESIDE EN SAN FRANCISCO
SABADO 8 DE MAYO A LAS 7 P.M
USC'S BOVARD AUDITORIUM

Dance Program Will Pay Tribute to Cuban Danseur Jorge Esquivel

A program of dance at the University of Southern California on Saturday, May
8, will pay tribute to Jorge Esquivel once the premier danseur of the
Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

Featuring a performance by Esquivel himself, the program will begin at 7 p.m.
in USC's Bovard Auditorium. Among the dancers slated to perform are the L.A.
Salsa Kids, USC's Alternative Tango, and young Los Angeles-area ballet
students. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Martin Bernheimer has described Esquivel at the height of the dancer's
powers: "Extraordinarily lithe, eminently Latin and macho-muscular, he exuded
what the hypesters like to call animal magnetism. He was a firebrand, in the
best sense. But he also was a cavalier, a disciplined stylist and the most
self- effacing, most considerate, most reliable partner a ballerina could
dream of."

For 18 years, Esquivel was the principal partner of Alicia Alonso -- the
legendary dancer who created a world-class ballet company in her image, the
National Ballet of Cuba. Now 50, he resides in San Francisco and works for
the San Francisco Ballet, which he joined in 1993. When he isn't teaching
classes, he performs character roles in the ballet company's productions.

USC's Boeckmann Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies and the
Cervantes Club for Arts and Letters are co- sponsoring the May 8 event both
to honor Esquivel and to celebrate the rich diversity of the dance world and
its masters.

Enter USC's University Park Campus through Gate 3 from S. Figueroa St.
(between Jefferson and Exposition Blvds.) at W. 35th St. Parking is free to
journalists upon presentation of press credentials, $6 to all others.
