USA - RUMSFELD DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN COLOMBIAN FIGHTER CANCELLATION (NOV
27/AFP)
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE -- Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said he
was unaware of any role played by the United States in Colombia's
decision to reverse an order to purchase military aircraft from
Brazil, Agence France-Presse reports.
"I have absolutely no knowledge of that. I suspect the role of the
U.S. government is nothing, except I can't speak for the whole of
the United States, I can only speak for the Secretary of Defense and
I know of no role at all," Rumsfeld said.
Colombia cancelled the purchase of 24 Brazilian jet fighters for
financial reasons last week.
A Bogota newspaper claims that the U.S. Southern Command advised the
Colombian government against the US$234 million purchase, suggesting
instead that Colombia should spend US$34 million to retrofit its
fleet of OV-10 and A-37 aircraft.
