After many years of manually changing the default daemon switches to
include -P and -rawtoo I'm very tempted to unilaterally just change them in
collectl.conf and wanted to know it others had an opinion.
For people who have not yet stumbled on these, -P says to generate plot
files on-the-fly and --rawtoo says to also generate a raw file. Since the
raw file is typically more than 10-20 times the size of the plot file, the
extra storage requirements are really negligible and you literally have the
plot file there for whenever you want it an no need to manually generate it
when you do.
The only potential negative is when generating plot data there is more
processing involved, possibly as much as double, BUT given the fact the
collectl uses less than 0.1% of a single CPU it would seem to me it's a
minor price to pay.
At the very least I'd recommend starting to use those setting in your own
environments.
