- ITmedia 2.0 Review and an interview with Sun's Tokyo Office

In Japan, expectations for the version 2.0 is growing. Even casual PC
magazines, which do not offer OSS coverage usually, introduce the
version 2.0 together with the FireFox these days.

ITmedia (http://www.itmedia.co.jp/) is a representative Japanese IT
Webzine. It serialized a review of version 2.0. and its title is “ the
standard of office applications OOo will change ”. This review
introduces new functions of the version 2.0 and examines compatibility
with Microsoft Office.

In the first review, ITmedia provided an interview with Naoyuki Ishimura
and Shigo Takamatsu of Sun's Tokyo Office. Its title is “Sun's viewpoint
about the Open Office.org community. Ishimura is involved in
internationalization of StarOffice and proceeds the TCM test with the
OOo community.

The below is Ishimura's comment regarding collaboration with the community.
“It was meaningful. Although it was a test for localization, we could
find problems concerning other than localization too. We could find
various bugs so the collaboration worked well. It worked smoothly
because people who join the OpenOffice.org community have considerable
interest in OpenOffice.org.”

- OOo add-on to do DB operation by Fio:calc was released

Fio is a plug-in to operate a database by Calc. Makoto Ono is
developing it. We can use Calc's cells to describe SQL statements and
display data. We can connect to a database by a standard-equipped
data-source, however, if we can operate the database by Calc's cells we
don't have to remember how to operate the data-source. Fio made this
possible. When you connect a database to do your routine, you can query
data by open a worksheet and run a macro.

- WiseKnot, a Japanese SI Company, adopted OpenOffice.org

Wise Knot does System Integrator business by OSS. They reduced their
licensing fee significantly since they had adopted OpenOffice.org.

In the spring of this year, WiseKnot increased their staff members from
50 to more than 200 to expand their business. All of the new staff
members use OpenOffice.org. Only staff members who need to exchange
document files with other companies use Microsoft Office. The adoption
of OpenOffice.org reduced the licensing fee for Microsoft by 8 million
yen and WiseKnot could supply their staff members with high-performance
desk top computers.

WiseKnot plans to distribute OpenOffice.org to their customers as
specific examples of open source software.
