I think it would be beneficial for maintainers at least directionally as you mentioned. That's why I was looking at it initially. Also, perhaps it's could be a non-failing CI step which outputs the `coverage` table if codecov really is a PITA? Maybe somehow auto-update a "what are we working on" issue with coverage that's < 85%? Might be a nice way for folks to contribute if they are just starting.
