Review Comment:
   Yes. Right. So I get the problem now. The API I was proposing *did not* 
specifically give version because that cannot be provided in any useful form. 
Instead it was providing git ref (in commit or git-describe format) or tar 
source and letting consumer provide a way to process this into version through 
out-of-band public data. This is *exactly* because, as you said, mechanisms to 
read version varies from project to project. IMHO us putting a default matcher 
to begin with was a mistake, we should have just forced element author to add 
an explicit matcher whenever there was intent to have version for a source. 
This would have allowed making it a fatal error always if the match fails.
