Jeff, there are a number of fixes coming up in 2.1.3, and even more in 2.1.4.
It's possible, for instance, if you're using offheap memory and writing very
large cell values, that the bookkeeping is incorrect and we're using much more
memory than we expect. This will be fixed in 2.1.3, releasing shortly. However
it's possible there is a resource leak problem. All of the code for the
management of this is getting a major overhaul in 2.1.4 to ensure it either
doesn't happen, or we get meaningful error messages to aid in a quick fix,
However, one thing you can try right now is to enable trickle fsync. The nodes
you are operating on have very little memory, and it's possible we're
exhausting all available memory with dirty page cache entries during a flush
that gets far ahead of your disks. This config change will ensure writes never
get significantly ahead of the disks, so that the page cache can be evicted.
