One advantage to MV is that people are somewhat more used to the MV lagging the 
underlying data.  PG goes so far as requiring you to manually issue refresh 
commands.  I think that makes them unusable, so I only mention that to 
illustrate an extreme -- with that precedent, having us say "MV are eventually 
consistent" sounds quite reasonable!

(Oracle has had self-updating MV forever.  I'm not actually sure what kind of 
transactionality guarantees you get there.)
