Moreover, if you were to handle NULLs in the application tier (say by the 
application using the string "NULL" or the INT -1 or whatever) you end up with 
exactly the same hot spot.  This is a known issue for distributed systems in 
general (not just Cassandra), so I would note it and move on - just like we 
note that GENDER is a bad partition key today.
