Thanks. Mostly looks good. However I must admit that now I'm looking at it 
again, I'm more than a little worried that we mutate the buffer by shuffling if 
we run out of room at the end for reading our vint. In the case where we may 
have future (or concurrent) accesses of the buffer, this would corrupt our 
readers. 

I think we may have to go back to the drawing board, and most likely offer a 
slow path (after all our prior work to avoid it). Of course, if we can extend 
the ByteBuffer in the constructor we can avoid this, but this won't always be 
possible.
