wait, why would we want two options?  for the purpose of just hammering w/ 
inserts it shouldn't matter if we retry the same one or skip to the next, but 
if we want to do reads later it makes a lot more sense to retry.  In other 
words, I can't think of a reason we'd want keep-going instead of keep-trying.
