also, to verify that there are no problems with the row data itself, can you 
run sstable2json on your sstable files?  (i suspect there is not since 
compaction worked, but just to rule it out...)  sstable2json will throw very 
noisy errors and abort if it runs into a problem, so if it completes with the 
most recent output being json-looking, then it's clean.
