I stumbled upon this through the failed dtest linked in the 
[PR|https://github.com/riptano/ccm/pull/664]. My assumption was that it would 
be preferable to restore the old behaviour, by having 
`handle_external_tool_process` return a string instead of binary value (which 
would be of little use).
