[~jmckenzie] bear in mind we have a java SHA that reliably passes the test and 
the next one that reliably fails it. So regardless of the python test issues 
imo there is sthg on the java side that can trigger this failure. In other 
words, you might rewrite this into a jvm-dtest and still have it fail in the 
same way. Wdyt?
