Here's a patch that removes the operator: 
https://github.com/driftx/cassandra/commit/d7512785ee35366a4d13337efa6a4322204163f1
 and should work with python 3.6. 

bq. upgrade the version of Python in the image, right? I would prefer the 
latter.

It would be good to upgrade, certainly, though that is perhaps out of scope 
here.
