In case of Option 1 :
While persisting metadata for unmanaged VMs is a feasible approach for one
or two instances. If multiple VMs become unmanaged, users are forced into a
repetitive and manual cleanup proces.
If we adopt this approach, we must at a minimum document this behavior
clearly in the release notes to set user expectations.
