Review Comment:
   I suppose we could just use some atomic method of `AtomicReference` like 
`getAndUpdate` to ensure that a reader doesn't get an inconsistent state of the 
object.
   
   My concern was that we shouldn't need synchronized methods on an object that 
is already behind an `AtomicReference`. Please feel free to create a follow up 
PR for this.
