winsmith opened a new issue, #20739:
URL: https://github.com/apache/druid/issues/20739

   ### Affected Version

   38.0.0

   ### Description

   On a Linux system with OpenJDK 25 installed, the `bin/start-druid` command
fails with the following error message:

   ```
   Druid requires Java 17 or 21. Your current version is: 25.0.4.1.
   If you believe this check is in error, or you want to proceed with a
potentially
   unsupported Java runtime, you can skip this check using an environment
variable:
     export DRUID_SKIP_JAVA_CHECK=1
   Otherwise, install Java 17 or 21 in one of the following locations.
     * DRUID_JAVA_HOME
     * JAVA_HOME
     * java (installed on PATH)
   Other versions of Java versions may work, but are not officially supported.
   For more information about selecting a Java runtime visit:
   https://druid.apache.org/docs/latest/operations/java.html
   ```

   This is wrong, because Druid now officially supports Java 21 and 25; the
linked page even says so.

   The root of the issue is `bin/verify-java`:
   - In
https://github.com/apache/druid/blob/2fdf0a04f9f901a89756908ce321c06d5493682a/examples/bin/verify-java#L71
 the regex in the last line only accepts lines with "21" or "17", this is the
version that seems to ship with 38.0.0
   - In
https://github.com/apache/druid/blob/master/examples/bin/verify-java#L71 (the
most recent version in the main branch) the file ONLY accept Java 25, despite
the release notes saying Druid accepts 21 and 25

   Tested on Ubuntu with openjdk 25.0.4.1 2026-08-18

   I'll try to make a PR with a fix, but I'd like a quick confirmation,
presented as checkmarks so I won't waste your time:

   - [ ] The files at `examples/bin` are the actual files that get shipped as
`/bin` in the distributed tar file
   - [ ] The script should accept Java 21 and 25
   - [ ] Yes, make a PR
