J Simonsen commented on NETBEANS-3172:
--------------------------------------

I can also confirm this.  I have been using Netbeans for several years on some
of my projects, mostly for PHP.  For the most part everything works well but
this issue has been constant and has never been fixed.  I've been seeing it
since at least 2015, probably longer.  I use several platforms
(windows/linux/mac) and I'm not sure if it affects them all but certainly on
Windows (several versions starting with at least as old as win7) it persists.
What happens is I launch netbeans and work on my project, everything is fine.
After a while things start to disappear.  The info in the gutter such as code
line numbers disappear, the breakpoint markers also disappear and I can no
longer use the gutter.  I can still press a hotkey to set and remove
breakpoints but it gets harder to use since the UI loses functionality.  Also,
the find function goes away.  I have a hotkey mapped (ctrl-f for me) and when I
press that nothing comes up (so what happens is I press ctrl-f and start typing
my search term but it actually ends up getting input into the code window
before I realize that the find function didn't come up).  If I look in the menu
the find option is no longer available, I think it is grayed out.  I have no
idea why – this happens if I'm actively using Netbeans or it even often happens
if I walk away for an hour and come back.  Almost always when I return Netbeans
is broken.  When I'm actively using it then normally it will go for 30 minutes
or so but after some fairly short period it breaks.  The only solution to this
is to stop Netbeans and restart it.  This is somewhat of a pain especially if
it happens while I am in the middle of debugging.  My specific cases have
varied, but for the most part I use PHP with xdebug.  I sometimes use php's
built-in server for small projects or quick tests and such.  Or I connect to a
local webserver, or I connect to a local vm, or I connect to a remote machine.
In all cases I'm using xdebug and in all cases this happens.  I don't know if
it's the xdebug module that causes it, but that's a possiblity.  The other
thing for me is I use subversion the most, so perhaps the source control
integration for subversion could be related.  I say those things because if
people developing for C/C++ or javascript or node or whatever else with
Netbeans maybe don't see it, then maybe it's a bug in a plugin or Netbeans
module that's specific to certain use cases.  I don't know what the real
problem is but my guess is there is a memory leak related to some kind of
background process and it eventually consumes enough resources that UI
allocations fail.  I'd be very happy if this problem were fixed as I have to
restart Netbeans several times a day, maybe as much as 20 times on a bad day
but at least 5-10 on normal days.  I keep updating hoping it will go away, but
alas, it persists.
