Resolution: Fixed
some of this got fixed by putting only the downloaded index file into /tmp and
extracting it from there to the cache location (and other tweaks I forgot
about).
the remote index is getting larger and the main chunk isn't segmented (so you
can't download only the last 2 years for example) and not very well compressed.
Who knows who will win: hard drives or maven central.
At least there is no need to redownload anything since it is carried over from
cache dir to cache dir between releases.
