I attach this patch NOT because it is finished but because I have been
distracted so much more from this task than I wanted and I am finding it
difficult to get back to it as regularly as I would like.
There are numerous issues with tests which I honestly can't describe just now
but will look in to when I can.
I also thought it would be a good idea to write some notes along the way so
I've included these as well.
This is a non trivial upgrade and I am pretty concerned (once we/I get it
working, that backwards compatibility is in question!). In the process I've
deprecated some of the API to maintain the backwards compat, but I know there
is much more work to be done.
As I said, I am not quite getting the time, so better here than on my machine
locally gathering dust.
I just realized that it was just under a month ago I logged this task. I've
been going back to it when I can, so it just shows how little I've been able to
spend on this at any one sitting!
