Fix for issue #8641. Should be tagged with `bugfix`. Might be considered a backwards-incompatible change, since the stand-alone tool will now fail if there's a segment generation error, while previously it would just log the error and return success. I also had to fix a few issues with build failures & warnings caused by other commits, thus changes to some `pom.xml` files.
