Review Comment:
the if-check at L259 and the switch-case at L317 assume pushMode must not be
null, but some of my test tasks didn't set it so they failed with NPE.
So, should tasks always set pushMode explicitly going on, or add some null
checks to be more defensive here? I assume we should do the latter to be
backward compatible. Thoughts?
