Seven tests pin the protocol: acquire is refused once retired; retiring an idle lease shuts down immediately; retirement defers shutdown until the last holder releases; a release without retirement keeps the client open; repeated releases and repeated retirement each shut down exactly once. Discriminating mutations (build result verified): the retired check dropped from acquire (red). Restored: 7/7 green.
