Glen Mazza commented on ROL-1982:
---------------------------------

Hi Gaurav, I don't personally like archive drop downs by date and am unlikely
to ever use them--who has the time to keep clicking on all the years and months
just to see if there's an article he or she would like to read? What I instead
do is have a last 20 in my right-side menu (http://www.jroller.com/gmazza/)
where everything is there in front of the person's nose without them needing to
click on months and years to see if there's something good.

That said, archive tree views are popular enough with bloggers that Roller
should probably have its own. Both Google Blogger (as you linked) and
Wordpress have archive trees -- the latter has several independently maintained
plugins as a matter of fact. You may wish to google <wordpress archive tree
widgets> for ideas to enhance your own. (This archive widget on the right-side
menu, for example, looks kinda nice IMO, even if it doesn't list blog articles:
http://blogs.antena3.com/confesiones-sin-bin/)

Anyway, I just copied your widget into my right-side menu template of my main
blog (uses Roller 3.1 though, so maybe the macro would render differently in
5.1): http://www.jroller.com/gmazza/, look for the "2013" under the "THANKS"
section. It will function as a basic archive tree view but there are presently
two problems with it: (1) it's showing only the current year, (2) It's not
formatting well, the entries are overwriting each other (check May and June
2013). Also, it would be nice, but not required, if there were (counts) in
parentheses after each month listing the number of articles from that month.

As of now, what we can do is copy your widget code into our Wiki for others to
leverage if they wish, but to include it in Roller we'd have to get these two
matters fixed first.

Thanks for your contributions and help so far on this project! By the way,
would you mind emailing/faxing/mailing an ICLA
(http://www.apache.org/licenses/#clas) to the Apache Software Foundation?
You're going to need to do so to become a committer on this or any other Apache
project, also Apache would be happier if we had an ICLA from you before we
apply any substantive code contributions from you.

> A macro that would provide the data of the Archives in Tree Structure
> something like [1]. I think it would be a nice enhancement to Roller, as
> Archive Pages are rarely used and this macro can be easily added to the Side
> menu of the blog.
