Thanks for the detailed report and for opening #12402 with the regression tests. I agree that the `ACL SETUSER user` call during connection setup is a problem on its own: it can modify server ACL state when the connection has the required permissions and fail otherwise, and it does not change the connection's authenticated identity. Passing the configured username through to the client in both SINGLE and CLUSTER modes, without any ACL administration, matches the expected behavior you describe, and since source and sink share the helper, both should be covered by the same change. We'll continue the review on the PR.
