Thanks for the focused report and for opening #12671. The diagnosis matches the current path: `field_type` is documented as optional, the parser leaves it unset, and `AssertExecutor.checkType` then dereferences that missing type for a non-null field. Falling back to the incoming row schema only when the option is absent is the right compatibility boundary; an explicitly configured type must retain its existing mismatch behavior. The parser-to-executor tests, explicit-type negative case, null-rule checks and updated existing Assert fixture are the right coverage shape. Since the fixture is exercised by `FakeSourceToAssertIT`, please make sure the container E2E actually runs rather than only compiles, so the configuration path is verified under the supported engine matrix.
