HADOOP-8931 shows a symptom of a larger problem: we need better diagnostics of
what all the environment variables and settings going through the hadoop
scripts to find out why something isn't working.
Ideally some command line parameter to the scripts (or even: a new environment
variable) could trigger more display of critical parameters.
