Haven't looked at the code, but wanted to amend my previous comment to include
the caveat that whatever changes are made cannot in any way change the behavior
of the current commands, lest we break backwards compatibility. I don't see
why this would happen, but such a restriction would help ease any
not-yet-expressed resistance.
